Work Package 4 – Value Chain Analysis of the Priority Sectors

Work package 4 is led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Work package 4 assesses which specific applications in the value chains of selected sectors are likely to form critical raw material-related bottlenecks. The key sectors to be analysed are energy, electronics and ICT and the following transport subsectors: green cars and aero transport. The assessment will be based on the analysis of the value chains for current and anticipated future risks associated with critical raw materials applications.

Main objectives:

• To analyse the value chains of the energy, electronics and transport sectors for current and anticipated future (until 2030) critical raw materials-related risks.
• To chart the current risk provision strategies and opportunities for industry.
• To assess which specific applications in the value chains of selected sectors are likely to form critical raw material-related bottlenecks.

Key activities:

• Identification of critical raw materials to be considered. Screening of their applications within the selected sectors, and identification of the production stages in Europe.
• Selection of the applications for more specific value chain analysis based on current and anticipated future demand in Europe and globally. Description of the value chains for selected applications, and identification of the critical raw material-related challenges and risks (bottlenecks) in the value chains.
• Charting of the risk provision strategies of enterprises based on interviews and assessment of the level of the risks.

How to get involved?

Participate in expert interviews on current and future development of critical-raw materials demand in the electronics, energy and transport sectors (or specific applications within these sectors) in Europe and globally. Email [email protected] to register your interest.
